2006 In Review

January 1, 2007

A lot of people are recording the best and worst of 2006 in their blogs. I encourage all of you to do the same!

Best Song I downloaded in 2006: It’s a tough one. I love “Lifesong” by Casting Crowns because it’s just…awesome. And “Never Alone” by Barlowgirl is such a powerful ballad. But I love singing “You’re so Vain” by Carly Simon in my car and I really love “How To Save A Life” by the Fray.

Worst Song I downloaded in 2006: “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” by Trace Adkins. Why did I download it? Because it was very late one night of the youth retreat and the high school boys wanted to dance to it. I’m a pushover…obviously.

Best Non-Fiction book I read: I’m reading a book called The Holy Longing by Ronald Rolheiser. I’m not done with it, so technically I didn’t read it in 2006…but it’s a good one. I also enjoyed Freakanomics. And of course, let’s hear it for The Bible! There aren’t many books that you can read over and over again without running out of new things to read.

Best Fiction I read: I re-read To Kill A Mockingbird. That was the best. But the best NEW Fiction I read is: Linda Fairstein’s Death Dance. I was challenged a bit by Queenmaker, a book about Michal (David’s Queen) by India Edghill.

Best Movie I saw in theatres: Well, Night At The Museum was actually pretty awesome. And so was Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest.

Best Kids’ Movie of the year: Cars or Charlotte’s Web

Worst Movie I saw in theatres: The Da Vinci Code. UGH.

Best Movie about 9-11: I added this category because I wanted to say that while United 93 is on all of the best movies of the year lists, I actually thought World Trade Center was a much better movie.

Favorite TV show of 2006: I don’t actually watch a ton of TV. But I have a three way tie for this one: Grey’s Anatomy, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Heroes.

Best Magazines I subscribed to: Mental_Floss and Youthworker Journal.

Best Website I started using: Blogcritics.org and Myspace

Best Week of Work: The week I spent in Gulfport, MS with the high school youth.

Best Week of Family Time: Dec. 24-January 31 (Yes, that’s this week!) Lots of time off meant lot of play time.

Best News I Heard This Year: All of the good news from friends and family—babies that were born or on the way, couples getting married, friends making big steps in their lives…
