From Luke 9:
46An argument arose among them as to which one of them was the greatest. 47But Jesus, aware of their inner thoughts, took a little child and put it by his side, 48and said to them, “Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me; for the least among all of you is the greatest.”
49John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.” 50But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him; for whoever is not against you is for you.”
Jesus always has hard words for me.
The disciples are argumentative already. Sidetracked by thoughts about which one of them is the greatest, they want Jesus to know–don’t worry, Jesus!–that they are trying to stop the people doing things in his name who do not actually follow with Jesus like they do.
Jesus’ answer is tough.
Wait a minute. Just because people don’t follow like us and with us, it’s okay for them to serve Jesus and do things in the name of Jesus, too?
And if they’re not actually against Jesus, they are for Jesus?
Lord, forgive me when I get argumentative and try to create enemies from people who are also serving you.
