When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dream.
Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then it was said among the nations,
‘The Lord has done great things for them.’
The Lord has done great things for us,
and we rejoiced.
Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
like the watercourses in the Negeb.
May those who sow in tears
reap with shouts of joy.
Those who go out weeping,
bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
carrying their sheaves. ~Psalm 126
One of my favorite things about God is that God restores.
Over and over again, we know stories of people who were lost or experienced loss…and eventually…sometimes after a very long time…
Like the nation of Israel, spending decades in exile, losing family and friends and homeland, crushed and oppressed…and then restoration at the hand of God. How sweet and dream-like the day of return must have been for a people that had lost so much. Tears become laughter, weeping turns to joyful shouts, captives are now free.
The God who restored Israel is the one who still brings restoration today. Sometimes it takes as long as decades. Sometimes it just seems like it does. But know this: broken, lost, discarded, forgotten, aching things will be mended, found, gathered, remembered and healed. Sorrow will become joy. Weeping will become laughter. Captives will be freed.
Thanks be to the Restorer!
