Signs

January 27, 2008

The high school youth group watched the movie “Signs” which was directed by M. Night Shyamalan. It was part of our “Movies and Faith” discussion group. We’re going to watch a movie each quarter and then discuss it on the Sunday night at youth group. If you haven’t seen this movie, it’s a good one…but it is not for the faint of heart. It’s a little bit creepy. Here is our discussion guide for tonight:

Name a moment in the movie that seemed important to you.

Do you see significance in the title of the movie? Read John 3:1-2. What does the word “Sign” mean in this context?

Is this a “Christian” movie?

Where do you see “coincidences” in the movie that maybe aren’t coincidences?

Read Hebrews 11:1

What role does faith play in this movie? What role does doubt play in this movie?

What do you see as the faith struggle for Graham?

Read Romans 8:28-30

At one point in the movie, Graham, speaking to God and trying to help his son through an asthma attack says, “Don’t do this to me again. I hate you. I hate you.” What is your reaction? Have you ever felt this way? What happens when you say this to God?

Some people face adversity with greater faith. Some people face adversity by losing faith. Which type were each of the main characters in “Signs?” Which type are you?

Read Job 38:1-18; 40:1-14

One response to Signs

  1. I actually remember liking that movie. That’s a neat study you’re doing. Sounds fun and informative.
Hope the first night went great!
