March 11, 2009

We had one of those teaser days yesterday–75 degrees, sunny, breezy. Beautiful! The day before was almost as warm and pretty. But today it’s like 40 degrees, rainy and cloudy. Oh well–we should feel blessed to have such beautiful weather in the middle of March!

The Durham family is having a good month so far! Last week, we were home almost every night (except Wednesday, which is church night) and were able to eat dinner together each night. That’s a tricky thing to accomplish with all of my meetings and Jonas’ scout schedule. This past Monday night, we went on the bike ride with Breck’s Bicycle Shop here in town. Each Monday, the shop is sponsoring a 12 mile ride around Henderson. It was a fun ride with lots of people showing up and we’ll definitely put it on our regular Monday night schedule!

My Lenten promise was to get more sleep and keep up my work outs so I’ll have more energy, get more things done, and in general be more pleasant in all situations so that I can be a blessing to others and used by God. I was really convicted that I was staying up too late and that was making me lazy and unmotivated. Well, I’ve been going to bed between 9:30 and 10:30 every night and waking up earlier than usual so that I can fix a healthy breakfast for my family and not be in such a rush to get out the door. I’ve been keeping up with my work out schedule, which has given me extra energy and helps me sleep better at night (among other benefits!). I’m making a to do list each morning at my desk and blowing through it and I’m actually enjoying housework again! What a difference extra sleep makes!

But as I’ve found, God is always working on me. Now I’m convicted about my busy meeting schedule and all of the extra nights I’m spending at the church. All the things I’m involved in are good things, but especially after spending so much time at home last week, I realize that I need to try to figure out a way to cut back or rearrange my meeting schedule. I was able to completely observe BOTH of my days off last week, which means that on Friday and Saturday, I did not go to the church or work on church stuff for even a second! This is something I almost never do because there’s always one more thing to do before Sunday and sometimes there are meetings or events happening on those days (for example, this Saturday there is a youth group movie night at the church).

Tonight is Habitat for Humanity night at the church. The new director of Habitat in Henderson is coming to speak. Then tomorrow, I’m taking the day off because I have to come in on Friday afternoon and Saturday night.

Pray for Jonas! He has to a Bag Book Report either today or tomorrow at school. He had to read a book (and of course he chose one that was a few grade levels above his and kind of long) and then prepare a report about it that included objects that represented various aspects of the book, index cards describing those objects, and a decorated grocery bag to keep all of these objects and cards in. He worked really hard on it!

  1. Family is extremely important. I am learning more and more how precious the moments are that we have together. (Was that too hallmark?) I am glad you spent quality time with your two favorite men!

Someone asked me what I was giving up for Lent. I told them, “I am giving up Lent for Lent.” I have actually never celebrated the holiday. This is only because I didn’t grow up celebrating that tradition. However, I am making an effort to learn more about it. I will Wikipedia it sometime this week. 🙂 I was talking to a friend of mine about Lent. I then realized how ignorant I was! I thought I would educate myself. I can’t wait for Palm Sunday and Easter!!!!

  2. Sounds like you are treading on some solid ground. Prioritizing is something that we all should make a priority. 🙂
